That's one way to choose what books to read, I suppose. I do try to read the ones that particularly interest me, because it's fun to have read a few of them when the prize is announced, so you have a favorite.Leila @ Readers' Oasishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04919583102046763801noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6812045909963010743.post-91728102608889400882014-10-26T11:17:45.965-04:002014-10-26T11:17:45.965-04:00I'm picky. My book club selected it because we thought, hey, it won the Booker--it's gotta be great! And then NONE of us liked it. :( Oof. We felt like maybe the committee had been rewarding the author for a long career, rather than picking the best book out of the nominees that year. And I totally agree with you on award winners...I pay attention, but don't really care if a book has won a prize or not when I'm deciding what to read. I've also had some bad experiences with prize winners...The Orphan Master's Son and The Round House are two I can think of off the top of my head (but, there are definitely more). Because of this, awards are actually more likely to make me avoid a book than read it. I feel like I know my taste is a bit different from the "committees" who decide these things!Sarah (Sarah's Book Shelves)https://www.blogger.com/profile/04114051128835057362noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6812045909963010743.post-59362822995239538952014-10-17T11:03:47.794-04:002014-10-17T11:03:47.794-04:00Oh, that's a good point . . .I wonder how book...Oh, that's a good point . . .I wonder how booksellers feel about this year's prizewinners! I am sure that they typically hope to see an uptick of sales from the winners--something like The Goldfinch, of course, I would think saw increased sales after winning the Pulitzer. The Baileys and Booker winners this year--I'm not so sure.

The Newbury winners are always such great books, I've found!Leila @ Readers' Oasishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04919583102046763801noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6812045909963010743.post-37590999037270339672014-10-17T10:55:58.286-04:002014-10-17T10:55:58.286-04:00I have no interest in the Man Booker winner this y... I have no interest in the Man Booker winner this year, but I did enjoy Burial Rites very much. I pay more attention to children's literary awards-- I used to manage the children's/YA department of a bookstore and was constantly getting parents who wanted to find the Newbury titles and I became aware of the quality of those titles. I guess I often feel that, as reader who loves literary fiction, I SHOULD be interested in reading the winner. I have no desire to read the most recent Mann Booker prize winner at the moment. Like you, I kind of feel guilty that I'm not interested in it.... Sometimes, I use the list of nominated books as a kind of suggested reading list--not that I feel like I need to read them all or even most of them, but I think of them as books for my consideration. I guess I feel a little guilty, however, when the winner is a book I have no interest in at all! Even though I know that is ridiculous. I do find myself much more attracted to the Tournament of Books, which usually comes in March, and will read more of those books since they tend to fall in line with my reading preferences to begin with.Shannon @ River City Readinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02024137897685829669noreply@blogger.com
